The holiday season is here! In order to spend more time with family and friends, many people have turned to online shopping to save time. But, is your personal information safe when shopping online? I’ll share some tips on how to keep your information safe in just a moment.
Now that the Holiday season has arrived, people are jumping online to do their holiday shopping. While online shopping has come a long way, some people are still concerned about how to keep their information safe.
Here are three quick tips to help you keep your information safe while shopping online:
Only shop on sites that have a secure checkout process.
Using a secure website for your online orders is a must. Most major web browsers have a lock icon at the beginning of the bar where you see a websites address. If the site that you are entering your payment information on doesn’t have a lock icon, think twice before ordering.
Avoid using unsecure or public WiFi networks.
When using unsecure or public wifi networks you run the risk of someone else being able to steal your important account and financial information. In fact, some hackers setup public wifi networks specifically to capture your information. It’s better to hold off on shopping until you are on a familiar network that is encrypted.
Use a credit card rather than a debit card.
The best plan of action is to use a credit card rather than a debit card for online purchases. The credit card you choose should have features like buyer or fraud protection. Additionally, you should use a lower credit limit card to minimize your risk in the event the card number is stolen. That way, if things go wrong, hackers can’t drain your bank account and you can get some help from your credit card company.
These are just a few ways to help keep your information safe while shopping online. If you have questions about any of these tips, or you want to make sure your wifi networks are secure, give our team a call.
